Major Population Shifts in “Core Counties” Around New York City

Cautioning that the population shifts in this Rutgers report – The Receding Metropolitan Perimeter – may not necessarily indicate a permanent change in demographics, the authors do point out that the counties in the immediate New York City area, including Hudson County, have witnessed a reverse in population decline at the expense of the more distant “suburban” counties in the past few years. This can be seen in the increased number of housing units in Jersey City as well as in this New York Times article: Suburbs Try to Prevent an Exodus as Young Adults Move to Cities and Stay. The American Factfinder from the Census Bureau will give you the official population as of 2010 as well as estimates through 2013.
