NJCU’s West Campus is not the only construction taking place along Route 440. Directly across the highway from our new campus, the Bayfront project is proceeding. Capping years of planning, this development within the larger Bayside plan calls for thousands of housing units and parking spaces, 20 acres of parks, copious retail/office locations, and a light rail station. To accommodate this new development, the Municipal Utilities Authority and related public works facilities have been vacated to allow remediation. A description of the plan, with plenty of graphics, is available online. Other noteworthy writings include: Jersey City has big plans for 100 acres on West Side along Hackensack River (Jersey Journal); Massive Jersey City redevelopment plan takes first step forward (The Real Deal); and Cushman & Wakefield retained as exclusive agents for 95-acre Jersey City parcel (Real Estate Weekly). Concurrent with this huge project, the city is also looking at using eminent domain to re-fashion a nearby section of the neighborhood as seen in the Route 440 Culver Redevelopment Plan (news articles here and here).
