Structure and Cost of U.S. Combat Units

With a budget of over $300 billion, this report from the Congressional Budget Office – The U.S. Military’s Force Structure: A Primer –  outlines and compares the major combat units of the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force. In some cases, direct comparisons cannot be made because of the different sizes of units. “This primer contains entries that describe all of the major elements of the military’s force structure. Those elements include the major combat units that are the traditional backbone of the armed forces (such as armored brigades, aircraft carrier strike groups, and tactical aircraft squadrons). They also include specialized organizations that provide specific capabilities to DoD (such as special operationsforces and missile defense).”(7)
